Someone removed and spray-painted over the faces of figures in the section of the mural from Samuel de Champlain to Ethan Allen. The mayors office says the damage is serious.
The mural has been at the center of controversy recently with critics saying it does not represent Burlingtons diversity.
“From the citys perspective, disagreement and dissatisfaction and difference of opinion is healthy and part of the democracy and is welcome. Vandalism and taking this decision into ones own hand, trying to force that on the whole community is not OK,” said Mayor Miro Weinberger, D-Burlington.
This comes weeks after the city voted to keep the mural in downtown until 2022. Weinberger says he believes the vandalism is in response to that decision. He says the city plans to increase security near the mural.
