TOMS RIVER, N.J. — U.S. Rep. Tom MacArthur ended his Election Night party Tuesday night without speaking and Democrat Andy Kim ended his early Wednesday by telling supporters, “We can win this thing,” as both campaigns declared the race too close to call in New Jerseys Third Congressional District.

“We’re feeling pretty good. He has been crossing the district about every day for the last two weeks. We’ve seen a lot of enthusiasm out there, we’ve seen a lot of enthusiasm at the door,” said Kim’s campaign spokesperson, Forrest Rilling.

“Ocean County gave Tom MacArthur a 30,000 plus victory margin but unfortunately Burlington County was not so kind,” said Ocean County Republican Chairman George Gilmore. “But we think hes still ahead. But we will still have to count provisionals and absentee votes.”

In Mount Laurel, meanwhile, a smiling Kim addressed his supporters just after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday and told them, “You are the reason why were in this place where we can win this thing. “

“While the polls closed four hours ago, the race is still too close to call, there will not be a result tonight,” said a spokesperson for Kim late Tuesday night.

Battleground congressional District 3 is “way too close to call,” according to a Republican source in the Third.

Historically, New Jerseys 3rd District has sent a Republican to Congress even when breaking blue in the presidential election. Democrats failed to field a viable candidate in 2016, with the nominee receiving just $600 in campaign donations. Kim raised $5.2 million, which helped his campaign run ads in a district that includes two of the nations most expensive media markets: New York and Philadelphia. MacArthur, who spent more than $5 million of his own money in his first congressional race, loaned his own campaign $1.4 million in the 2018 cycle.

At the moment, according to the source, incumbent U.S. Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-3) is up by just under 500 votes as he tries to stem Democratic challenger Andy Kim.

MacArthur, a millionaire former insurance executive who moved into the district from northern Jersey to run for Congress, had tried to paint Kim, the son of South Korean immigrants, as an outsider. A super PAC connected to House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) ran an ad telling voters Kim was not one of us, while the New Jersey Republican Party mailed out racist fliers featuring a photo of fish heads that depicted Kims name in a chop suey font.
