RCMP say shooting at CrossIron Mills Mall resolved, suspect still at large
One person has been injured and a suspect is still at large, according to police, after a shooting at a shopping mall north of Calgary.

Calgary police say they believe the shooting at the CrossIron Mills mall in Balzac, Alta., was targeted. Police and RCMP received reports of a shooting at about 7:11 p.m. MT.

Some people who had been in the mall were reportedly unable to go home because their vehicles were blocked off by police tape at the scene as law enforcement officers investigated. Police told Global News a bus was being used to shuttle those people to a nearby hotel.

Police said they are slowly letting people out of the mall while they clear each store and view video surveillance.

I just suddenly heard all this screaming and saw… several dozen people running out of the mall,” said Kendell Beleshko, who was at the mall when the frenzied scene unfolded. “They were screaming and running to their cars and I panicked.

A spokesperson for the Calgary Police Service confirmed one person had suffered gunshot wounds but they did not elaborate on where the person was believed to have been shot or where they were found.

"I wasn't completely paying attention, I was looking at my phone as most people do, and I suddenly heard all this screaming and saw several dozen people running out of the mall," he said. "They were screaming and running to their cars and I panicked, and got into my vehicle as well."

Police said multiple units were dispatched to an area in the mall near a movie theatre when the initial shots fired call(s) came in. They confirmed the police helicopter was also called to respond.

RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney said people should stay away from the mall until further updates become available.

"It's a huge mall, and it's taking time for our teams to go through and safely search them to make sure it's safe," she said.
