Delta picks Canadian partner as airline consolidation quietly goes global

WestJet has airline alliances that give its customers access to 175 destinations in 20 countries. The deal would coordinate schedules for new nonstop flights and expand codesharing with Delta, which WestJet sees as a key partner in its quest to become a more global airline. The joint venture is subject to board, shareholder and regulatory approval, according to a Delta news release. It’s unclear whether it would mean more nonstop flights to Canada from Atlanta.

For Delta passengers, the deal would mean a more “seamless” experience when traveling between the U.S. and Canada and connecting to WestJet flights, when using frequent flier miles between the two carriers, accessing airport lounges and making transfers, according to Delta international president Steve Sear. WestJet’s operations in Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto offer connecting points for Delta travelers, he said. WestJet does not fly to Delta’s largest hub in Atlanta.

“The additional demand that we will be getting from Delta south of the border will play a significant role, particularly in the business cabin and our premium economy cabin,” Mr. Sims said.Delta and WestJet began interlining in 2011 and codesharing in 2012. Their cooperation caused a planned extensive codesharing accord between WestJet and Dallas-based Southwest Airlines to be terminated before it was implemented. Southwest, which had wanted to partner with WestJet to extend its reach to Canada, said WestJet’s plans with Delta were “inconsistent” with the WestJet-Southwest deal.
