Council voted Tuesday to relocate the two projects, along with the performing arts centre, to the current arena on Elgin Street. The move will create an arts hub along Elgin Street that will eventually include the Elgin Greenway, along with the school of architecture, Place des Arts and several arts-related shops.

Ward 9 Coun. Deb McIntosh wanted reassurance that Sudburians and those living around the Nickel City will attend events in high enough numbers to warrant the projects’ price tags. Wood said the disposable income that is currently leaving Sudbury will remain here, boosting the local economy.

Ward 5 Coun. Robert Kirwan pointed out that between all the new projects, including the performing arts centre and the Kingsway arena, there will be about $500 million invested into Sudbury.
