A metallic balloon that fell onto a HydroOne power station caused a power failure that affected more than 25,000 customers on Hamilton Mountain Friday.

 The area affected included LimeRidge Mall,  The Hamilton Wentworth District School Board headquarters, Mohawk College and St. Joseph's Healthcare mountain campus.

The outage hit the Hamilton Mountain around 11 a.m. after the balloon got caught inside a piece of equipment at Hydro Ones Mohawk Station, the utility said in a tweet.

At around 11 a.m. Alectra Utilities reported the outage in the area. They said it was a problem coming from HydroOne.

A metallic balloon is being blamed for a power outage that left more than 25,000 Hamilton homes and businesses in the dark Friday.

The outage encompassed a wide swath of the Mountain, from roughly Upper Paradise in the west to Upper Gage in the east, from the brow to south of Rymal Road.
