Police traffic analysts shut down the stretch of highway until they finished conducting measurements and taking photos at the scene.

On Saturday around 8:45 p.m., an RCMP officer spotted a motorcyclist travelling westbound on Highway 1 in Kamloops at what appeared to be a high rate of speed.

The office pulled over the male motorcycle rider. As the officer was exiting the police cruiser, the motorcyclist reportedly rode off, according to RCMP reports.

Police allege that the motorcyclist was driving quickly on the highway and that when he was pulled over, the motorcyclist initially stopped but, just as the RCMP member was in the process of getting out of the police cruiser, took off again.

A short time later, a man’s motorcycle hit a centre median and went into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes of Highway 1.

The police watchdog stresses that it investigates whenever police are involved in an incident in which someone dies or is seriously injured regardless of whether “there is any allegation of wrongdoing.”

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been tapped to investigate whether there is any link between the police officer’s actions and the crash involving the motorcyclist.

Anyone who saw, heard or who may have dashboard camera footage of the road-side stop or crash is asked to contact the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.
