British Columbia's police watchdog is investigating a motorcycle crash in Kamloops on Saturday night that involved an RCMP officer.

The Independent Investigations Office says RCMP reported a motorcyclist travelling at high speed on Highway 1 at 8:42 p.m.

Police allege that the motorcyclist was driving quickly on the highway and that when he was pulled over, the motorcyclist initially stopped but, just as the RCMP member was in the process of getting out of the police cruiser, took off again.

An officer pulled over the male driver, but RCMP reported that he drove off as the officer got out of his vehicle.

The police watchdog stresses that it investigates whenever police are involved in an incident in which someone dies or is seriously injured regardless of whether “there is any allegation of wrongdoing.”

Police traffic analysts shut down the stretch of highway until they finished conducting measurements and taking photos at the scene.

“Shortly after, it was reported that the male’s motorcycle hit a centre median and went into oncoming traffic (eastbound on Highway 1),” an IIO news release states.

The single-vehicle crash saw a motorcyclist lose control and crash his bike on Highway 1 near Comazzetto Road.

The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
