Byron Froese will remain captain of the AHL’s Laval Rocket after being chosen by the coaching staff and Montreal Canadiens management, the team announced on Thursday.
Forwards Kenny Agostino, Michael Chaput, Alexandre Grenier and Michael McCarron were selected alternate captains.
Froese, 27, enters his eighth season in professional hockey and his second with the Canadiens organization. A fourth-round selection of the Chicago Blackhawks (No. 119 overall) at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the Winkler, Man., native played 48 games in 2017-18 with the Canadiens, collecting 11 points (three goals) and 26 penalty minutes. He added 11 points (three goals) in 13 games with Laval.
Agostino is in his first season with the Montreal Canadiens organization. He led the AHL in scoring in 2016-17 with 83 points (24 goals) and also played 22 games in the NHL.
Chaput joined the Canadiens after spending last season in the AHL with Utica, where he had 42 points (17 goals) in 55 games. He played the 2016-17 season with the Vancouver Canucks, collecting nine points (four goals) in 68 games.
Grenier, a third round (No. 90 overall) selection by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2011 NHL draft, played for the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds last season before signing with the Canadiens during the summer. The Laval native has 219 points (87 goals) in 349 AHL regular season games.
McCarron, the Canadiens’ first selection (No. 25 overall) at the 2013 NHL draft, has 81 points (31 goals) in 144 games in the AHL and eight points (two goals) in 69 NHL games.

Froese remains the only player in franchise history to have captained the club, however four new alternate captains have been named.

Chaput and Grenier, 26 and 27 respectively, are also both due to begin their first campaign with the Habs having joined from Utica and Springfield.
McCarron is entering his fourth season with the Rocket, having been selected 25th overall by the Canadiens in the 2013 NHL draft.
