New York Giants @ San Francisco 49ers: Latest NFL odds, prediction & best bets for Monday Night Football
Edit Slot to 247Sports Home Slot to New York Giants Newsletter Newsletter Jamon Brown will start on the New York Giants offensive line in his first game with the franchise after being claimed on waivers from the Los Angeles Rams during New Yorks bye week.

According to sources close to ESPNs Jordan Raanan, Brown will draw the start for the Giants at right guard on Monday Night Football when the team plays the San Francisco 49ers.

One of the second-order effects of such a blaze is that the air quality in most of Northern California has been absolute shit for days. The San Francisco Bay Area and the Sacramento metro area have been blanketed in a hazy, disgusting layer of smoke and ash from the Camp Fire, and according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the air quality has consistently hovered between unhealthy and very unhealthy for most of the weekend. Ive felt woozy and lightheaded even when Im inside my apartment. The management district says that if the air is unhealthy, people with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion. Everyone else should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.

While speaking with Giants reporters on Thursday, head coach Pat Shurmur sounded confident in what Brown has shown since the Giants claimed him off of waivers last week and he even hinted that the former Rams starter will be the Giants starter this week when they play the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football.

The NFL looked into moving the game or canceling it, but apparently the NFLs threshold for doing so is very unhealthy. It would be a hassle to either move the game to tomorrow night or play it elsewhere, like Arizona, but also its a really bad idea to make fans stand outside for hours and make players exhaust themselves in air that, anecdotally, smells like someone smoking three cigarettes at once next to a camp fire.

“We’re preparing Jamon Brown as if he’s a starter. From what I’ve seen, he’s a fast learner,” Shurmur said. “He’s a really big man and he can move his feet. He was a starter last year on a team that won over ten games. We were glad he was available and we’re excited about getting him going.

The Giants head coach also made it clear that if Brown is inserted into the starting lineup, it will be the only change along the starting offensive line. In other words, right guard John Greco will be sent back to the bench and Spencer Pulley will remain the starter at center. Earlier this season, the Giants turned to Greco at center once original starter Jon Halapio went down with an injury that landed him on injured reserve. Greco was moved over to right guard when the Giants benched struggling starter Patrick Omameh and Pulley has started at center in each game since.

Something that might qualify as heavy exertion is football, and yet the Raiders played a home game in nasty air yesterday. They had to hand out masks to fans in order for them to be able to breathe, which really makes you wonder why the players werent protected, and why the game took place at all.

Brown has already made his impact felt since signing with the Giants on their most important franchise player — rookie running back Saquon Barkley.

The San Francisco 49ers are about to host Monday Night Football and play the New York Giants at their stadium in Santa Clara. This is what the air quality is in the Bay Area right now.

“I definitely can learn a lot from a guy who blocked for probably at the end of today, the MVP of the league, in my opinion,” Barkley said to Giants reporters on Tuesday. “I watch film of Todd Gurley, I love the way he plays. He’s an all-purpose back, a threat any time he touches the ball. He runs physical, running great in between the tackles.

“[Brown] is someone that I’d be wrong if I don’t go and pick his brain and go ask that guy what he sees that Todd did or ask him what makes Todd exceptional and the reason why he is player that he is today. That’s something that I want to learn from him because I want to compete.”

The Giants, who had not led in a game for more than a month, came back from a 10-point second-half deficit and a three-point fourth quarter deficit. Manning led the Giants down field on nine plays, using Shepard, tight end Evan Engram and running back Saquon Barkley after heavily relying on Odell Beckham for most of the game.

According to ESPNs Field Yates, Brown was a popular target in the NFLs waiver system, as the Bears, Packers, Ravens and Titans all put in a claim for him, per source. The Giants had top priority and so they were able to land the talented and massive mauler. Brown checks in at 6-foot-4 and 340 pounds. Brown was originally an early third-round draft pick at No. 72 overall by the Rams in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Brown emerged as a consistent run-blocker and started all 16 games last season for Los Angeles in 2017 (including one postseason game), who ranked third in run blocking and ninth in pass blocking, according to Football Outsiders. He was suspended for the first two games of this year for violating the NFLs substance abuse policy, however, and backup Austin Blythe took over his position and played well enough to keep it.

“One of the reasons I believe in bringing pressures or bringing things that look like pressures that arent is just trying to create 1-on-1 matchups,” Giants defensive coordinator James Bettcher said earlier this week. “When we get 1-on-1 matchups, we got to be better winning those matchups.”

With the Rams acquisition of Dante Fowler from the Jacksonville Jaguars before the trade deadline, Los Angeles needed to free up a roster spot and they surprisingly chose Brown. Its unclear if they attempted to trade him before the deadline.

On the offensive side, right guard Jamon Brown became the ninth different linemen to start and the 10th to play. All those pieces have added up to four different starting combinations but no answers as the Giants entered Week 10 with 31 sacks allowed, second-most in the NFL.

According to Brandon Bate of SB Nations Turf Show Times Brown did not lose his spot with the Rams due to poor play. The best offensive line in the NFL (Rams) may not have a need for Brown, but the Giants surely do. Well find out what kind of impact he can have soon.

Manning earned his 27th career fourth-quarter comeback by leading the Giants on a 75-yard touchdown drive to beat 49ers, 27-23, on Monday Night Football. He capped the drive with a three-yard scoring strike to Sterling Shepard, who had been quiet for most of the game.

Theres just a combined wins between these two once storied franchises that are now battling it out for the first pick of the draft rather than play-off places.

Rookie quarterback Nick Mullens had one of the best NFL debuts of all time last week against the Raiders, and hes bagged the starting spot again against a Giants defence that has the fifth-fewest interceptions this season.

New Yorks defence will still present a bigger challenge than the hapless Raiders did on Mullens debut, and its hard to trust anyone on either of these teams with any confidence.

Improving 49ers defense readies for the Saquon Barkley challenge

The Giants have had a bye week to get themselves together and are going up against a third-string quarterback but still go into the game as 3.5-point underdogs due to the mess their season has become.

Eli Manning is under all sorts of pressure but in receiver Odell Beckham and running back Saquon Barkley the Giants have the two best players, elite players at that, on the field on Monday night so getting them the ball as often as possible should be their gameplan.

The Giants are in transition and Manning is at the point of his career — and life — that doesn’t fit into that narrative right now. There was even talk that he may simple retire after this season rather than go through the indignity of being cut. He deserves to go out on his own terms.

The Giants have no problems moving the chains but they simply cant turn those yards into points as they average just under 19 per game and have scored 14 touchdowns. By contrast, the Kansas City Chiefs average 18 points a half and Todd Gurley has scored more TDs by himself.

Eli’s age (37) and his salary are both against him returning. His salary cap charge for 2019 is a whopping $23.2 million. There’s little to no chance the Giants keep him on. By releasing Manning after the season, they will rid themselves of all but $6.2 million of that.

The 49ers are relatively welcoming to opposing offences though as over one-in-three drives against them get into the red zone, so its a great chance for Big Blues playmakers to finally get some joy.
