17-year-old boy dead, five others injured after shooting in Mississauga
A 17-year-old boy is dead and five others were wounded after gunfire erupted in Mississauga on Saturday evening, Peel Regional Police say.

Speaking to reporters from the scene Saturday night, Chief Chris McCord said among those injured are a 13 year-old, a 16 year-old, two 17 year-olds and a woman in her 50s. One of those victims is in life-threatening condition, while the others are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, McCord said.

Police are now searching for what they believe are "multiple individuals armed with semi-automatic weapons," who fled from the area after the shooting.

They have not identified the suspects at this time and have yet to make any arrests. He did say they don’t believe the suspects are still in the area as an extensive search was conducted, but they still have a genuine concern for public safety.

"There is a concern for public safety," McCord said, though he added police have combed the area and don't have reason to believe the suspects will return.

Peel Regional Police were called to an apartment building on Darcel Avenue near Morning Star Drive and Goreway Drive at 6:22 p.m. ET. Multiple vehicles with bullet holes could be seen in the area.

Investigators believe the shooting took place at a parkette behind the building. McCord told reporters that investigators have information that a music video was being filmed behind the building, but it's unknown if the shooting was related to that filming in any way.

There was a heavy police presence in the area for much of the evening as officers combed through the building to rule out any other victims or possible suspects.

McCord said there is a large scene due to numerous shell casings found in the area. Police have also located vehicles that have bullet holes.

The Peel Regional Police homicide bureau is on scene after a shooting in Mississauga left one person dead and sent five others to hospital with serious injuries.

"We would like to extend our condolences to the family," he said. "Our officers attended the scene and provide life-saving measures to try and help the young person.

McCord said the victims were located in different areas of the complex. Some of the victims made their way to trauma centres.

When asked if the shooting was targeted or gang-related, McCord said it is too early in the investigation to determine the motive.

As for a suspect description, or identification, Yashnyk said police don’t yet have any information on that, but “we’re speaking with several witnesses and will be canvassing for video.”

He said preliminary information suggests that there are multiple suspects who were armed with semi-automatic weapons.

Circumstances surrounding the incident were scant, but Const. Iryna Yashnyk of the Peel Regional Police say it happened outside an apartment building in a residential area of Mississauga, Ont., just after 6 p.m. One person died at the scene, while five others were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.

Suspects descriptions, McCord said, will be released after investigators have gathered all information.

"Its early in the investigation, and its still very much an active scene and a dynamic investigation," Yashnyk told reporters as police officers went door-to-door in the nearby apartment building looking for more victims and potential suspects.

"When you have individuals armed with weapons such as these, yes we do have a genuine concern for public safety."

Paramedics, meanwhile, said the person who died was a male, though his age was unknown. Supt. Kyle Johansen of the Peel regional paramedics added that a woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

McCord said there is a large scene due to numerous shell casings found in the area. Police have also located vehicles that have bullet holes.

A music video shoot behind a Malton housing complex appears to have been the target of a deadly shooting Saturday evening that left one person dead and six others injured.

The police chief is urging people in the area who witnessed the shooting to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Witnesses told the Sun the victims were part of a music video shoot in a parking lot behind the building when the gunmen pulled up and opened fire into the crowd.

A resident who does not want to be identified told CP24 that shootings happen a lot around in the area.

Up to 20 police officers, including heavily armed members of the Peel tactical unit attended the scene, who assisted in clearing the low-rise apartment complex.

"Its really sad to know that someone is deceased around here. Im really sad for the family," she said.
