1 dead, 2 seriously injured in Mississauga drive-by shooting

Const. Danny Marttini, spokesperson for Peel Regional Police, said on Wednesday that homicide detectives are now in charge of the investigation.

According to police, the vehicle containing the three victims was on the ramp and the driver was waiting to make a left turn onto Derry, when another vehicle pulled up alongside and at least one person opened fire.

"It's hard to say [if] it's targeted or not, but just by the style of it and from different incidents I have dealt with in the past, I would say it has that marking of being targeted. It's not a random shooting," Marttini told reporters.

“This violence has no place in our City. It’s why I continue to call on senior levels of government to deliver funding to tackle the issue of guns & gangs and the root causes.”

Marttini said police were told that the vehicle the victims were in had just exited the northbound lanes of Highway 410 at Derry Road and was about to make a turn onto Derry Road to go westbound when another vehicle came up beside them. Several shots were fired into the passenger side.

The second shooting Crombie was referring to in her tweet took place just two hours after the drive-by. A man was fatally shot while sitting in a car outside a condo near Square One.

There were a number of other cars on the highway at the time and that means there is a good chance there were witnesses, Marttini added.

“Like all Mississauga residents, I am appalled and deeply unsettled by the 2 brazen shootings last night,” she said in a tweet Wednesday morning.

No arrests have been made. Police are still looking for suspects but have not released any descriptions. Officers are notifying next of kin.

Police have reopened a stretch of Derry Road, from Kennedy to Tomken Roads, and two Highway 410 off-ramps to Derry Road, northbound and southbound, after investigating for hours.

The shooting happened on the Highway 410 northbound ramp to Derry Road. Police were called to the area shortly before 10 p.m.

Marttini said the Highway 410 shooting is not connected to a fatal shooting outside a Mississauga condo on Webb Drive, near Burnhamthorpe Road and Confederation Parkway, shortly before midnight on Tuesday. A male driver was shot in a vehicle.

Paramedics confirmed one man was pronounced dead at the scene and another man and a woman suffered life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses have told investigators that a man approached the victim on foot, fired several shots into the vehicle and then fled across the street.

One person is dead and two others have been seriously injured after a drive-by shooting in Mississauga on Tuesday night.

Anyone who was driving through the area and may have dashboard camera video is urged to contact police.

Police are investigating two separate shootings in Mississauga that left two dead and two others seriously injured on Tuesday night.

Peel police confirmed that three victims were found inside a vehicle in the area following a drive-by shooting.

One man was subsequently pronounced dead and the other two victims, a man and a woman, were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

It is the second shooting in the highway this year. An 18-year-old Brampton teen was shot to death during a car-to-car shootout on the 410 between Bovaird Drive and Sandalwood Parkway on Sept. 16.

Just hours later at around midnight, police were called to a reported shooting outside of a building on Webb Drive, located near Confederation Parkway and Burnhamthorpe Road.

Officers found a man with gunshot wounds inside a newer model black Volvo sedan parked in front of a condo building in the area.

When officers arrived they observed a male that was in the drivers side of the vehicle. He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and as a result, succumbed to his injuries at the scene, Const. Bancroft Wright said on Wednesday morning.

Reports are from witnesses that a male approached the victim, shots were fired, and the male (suspect) ran across the roadway into the parking lot.

Wright said the suspect fled the area in a vehicle but a description of the car has not been released.

One witness described hearing four "really loud" gunshots and said when he looked out of his window, he saw three cars fleeing the scene.

He added that the other two cars he saw speeding off were a dark-coloured Infiniti SUV and a white Mercedes CLA.

Police have not released any information on possible suspects in either case and say it is too early to confirm if the shootings are linked.
