SIU investigating death of man Tasered by police in Mississauga
Officers were called to Runningbrook Drive, near Tomken Road and Bloor Street, in Mississauga at around 3:17 a.m. for reports of a disturbance.

“Officers located the male and had an interaction at which point a conducted energy weapon was deployed,” Peel Regional Police Cst. Akhil Mooken said.

Ontario's police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, is probing the circumstances of the man's death. The SIU is a civilian oversight agency that invokes its mandate when a police interaction leads to death or serious injury.

Peel paramedics said the man is believed to be in his 30s and was in critical condition when he was transported.

An "altercation" took place between officers and the man, said Const. Sarah Patten. The man was taken to a local hospital after the interaction, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

Peel police said the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate and will be investigating the incident.

Peel Regional Police say they were called to Runningbrook Drive in Mississauga, Ont., around 3:15 a.m. for reports of a "suspicious male causing a disturbance."

The SIU is an independent enforcement agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury or alleged sexual assault.

Another neighbour who identified himself only as Roman says that shortly before police arrived, there was a group of people on the street yelling.

Several police cruisers, three ambulances, and one fire truck all responded to the scene on Wednesday morning.

When police arrived, they found the man in the backyard of the home. The man was Tased after an interaction with police.

Roman Haruk, who lives in the neighbourhood, said he frequently sees people hanging out in a park near the area where the interaction took place.
