Nanaimo hiker found safe after spending night in wilderness – CTV News

Nanaimo Search and Rescue is reminding hikers to share their trip plans with family and friends before going out to enjoy the backcountry.

Nanaimo SAR members responded to a call for an overdue mountain biker in the Doumont Road area of Nanaimo Tuesday morning. The mans truck was found by family Monday evening and they called the police.

We know he left from the area at the end of Weigles Rd. because weve located his vehicle there,” Tonn told NanaimoNewsNOW on scene. “Right now were doing more ongoing investigation as well as searching to see if we can determine any more information.

Missing Nanaimo mountain biker turns up safe

He ended up hiking to Cinderella Lake to go fishing and decided to spend the night once it started getting dark. 

Nanaimo RCMP said the man planned on spending the night in the bush after heading out Monday, but the message was not relayed to family members and he was reported missing Tuesday morning.

Unfortunately, he hadnt let anybody else know his plans, says Allen Tonn, search manager for Nanaimo SAR.

Allen Tonn, search manager with Nanaimo Search and Rescue, said a man in his 30s was reported missing after he went into the backcountry Monday afternoon.

Its a key reminder that its great to go out and spend time in the outdoors but please make sure you file a trip plan.

Arrowsmith Search and Rescue president Nick Rivers said the man was located early Tuesday afternoon by an RCMP dog on a trail near Weigles Rd.

The hikers footprints in the snow were spotted from a SAR aircraft and police dog services were then used to locate him.

The missing mans mother and uncle anxiously waited at the scene and were receiving updates from Nanaimo SAR late Tuesday morning.

A 38-year-old man reported overdue in a Nanaimo area popular with mountain bikers has been found safe.

There was a large response to the missing report, including air patrols, RCMP dogs and SAR teams from around the mid-island.

Nanaimo RCMP and search and rescue volunteers searched the trails west of Doumont Road after the mans family said he didnt return from a mountain biking trip Monday.

The mountain biker had planned to spend the night on the mountain, but that message wasnt conveyed to some family members.
