He joined Jordan Lynch (Northern Illinois, 2013) as the only players in FBS history to rush for 300 yards and pass for 150 in a game, and his 23.4 yards per carry are atop the school charts, passing Trung Canidate, who ran for 288 yards on 18 carries (16 yards per rush) in 1998.

Slaughter: “The Gary Andersen news was both parts confusing and shocking. I never thought something like this could be in the works for a guy who was under contract through the 2021 season. However, college football is a business and at the end of the day, the OSU President and Athletic Director both have to make decisions for the financial well-being of the university. I believe that Andersen saw this and realized that this was the best way for everyone involved to get what they want. He left 12 million on the table and put the university in a good position in terms of being able to hire a new head coach. No one near the program saw this coming this soon.”

Smith first heard of Andersen’s exit from Washington coach Chris Petersen, who had learned the news midway through his press conference Monday.
Ten months ago, Oregon State halted an 8-game losing streak to Civil War rival Oregon with a 34-24 win in Corvallis. Because of that win, many analysts viewed the Beavers as an ‘up and coming’ program in the Pac-12 ready to take the next step towards respectability.

He might not be the best quarterback on the field this week, let alone the best player.

Not totally sold that he’s a builder of a program. But a finalist interview with OSU president Dr. Ed Ray would be incredible reality television. I’d buy the PPV on that one.

Reporters asked Smith about the coaching transition at OSU, where he played quarterback from 1998-2001. The conversation naturally shifted to rumors linking Smith to the Beavers’ head coaching job, which have come from numerous national outlets.I think Andersen’s two-and-a-half season tenure as coach might well go down as the worst in modern OSU football history. At least Craig Fertig, Joe Avezzano, Dave Kragthorpe and Jerry Pettibone stayed the course and didn’t publicly blame the people around them on their way out the door.

Mike MacIntyre, whose relationship with Andersen dates to 2010 when MacIntyre was at San Jose State and Andersen was at Utah State. “We definitely need people like him in college coaching. …

Jonathan Smith (Offensive Coordinator, Washington) — He’s a natural candidate and checks all the boxes. Smith played quarterback at Oregon State (1998-2001) and led the Beavers through that magical Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame.

Wilson spoke highly of Hall, a former Fresno State safety who played in the NFL for six seasons.

One thing is for sure: Like Huck, you never know what’s coming out of Leach’s mouth.

Former Oregon State coach Gary Andersen hurling assistants under the bus

Oregon State and coach Gary Andersen surprisingly parting ways on Monday, the Beavers now join Ole Miss as Power Five programs in search of a full-time head coach. While the Rebels have their own share of problems, Corvallis has also proven to be a tough place for coaches to succeed, as evidenced by Andersen’s time with the Beavers.

Hall takes over as interim coach at OSU

John Canzano of The Oregonian, that Andersen was contemplating this move for some time. The texts also show that Andersen blames much of his failure at Oregon State on his assistant coaches.Colorado is never going to be able to go toe-to-toe for five-star recruits, but out-of-state prospects from Texas and Florida have shown a willingness to sign with the school in recent years.

Andersen (Sept. 9): “Hard place right now… one thing I guarantee you is this: This staff needs to figure it out. I ain’t going to die doing this [expletive]! It’s on me and I get that and right now I hired the wrong guys!! Beaver Nation deserves much better! End of story!!”“It’s flattering obviously and what not, because I’ve got great memories there,” said Smith after Washington’s Wednesday morning practice. “My extreme focus is on us and the next couple of practices. The Sun Devils present a challenge, and we’ve got a lot of things going, so it’s a huge game Saturday.”

“After many discussions with Scott, waiving my contract is the correct decision and enables the young men and the program to move forward and concentrate on the rest of this season,” Andersen said in a statement. “Coaching is not about the mighty dollar. It is about teaching and putting young men in a position to succeed on and off the field. Success comes when all parties involved are moving in the same direction.”

Report: Gary Andersen Was Fed The Hell Up With His Coaching Staff

I suspect there’s more to it than this. Andersen blacked out at his home in 2010, falling in his bathroom and cracking two vertebrae in his neck. He said afterward it was a matter of pushing too hard. He vowed to keep things in perspective after that.

Oregon State Beavers will pick up the pieces on offense and go forward

Slaughter: “I have the Beavers winning 25-21. Colorado has not looked very good since Pac-12 play hit, and the Beavers will be looking to play inspired football for coach Hall. The Beavers will bring out some new wrinkles on offense and defense and will be able to stun the Buffs in Reser.”Get Pac-12 Conference news in your inbox. Sign up for the Pac-12 Hotline newsletter. Roundup: Gary Andersen and Oregon State part ways

Regardless, it’s clear that Andersen didn’t think he could win in Corvallis, under the program’s existing conditions. It’s equally clear to see the burnout factor that goes with the job.

Kyle Whittingham and his staff have done a great job expanding the school’s recruiting footprint. Utah is also underrated as a state in terms of producing talent and the more the Utes win the more appealing the job becomes every year.

Andersen (Sept. 12): “I have them by the [expletive] for every penny, no buyout for the next four not counting this year… but that’s not my style!! If it does not improve I will do some crazy [expletive] with my salary so I can pay the right coaches the right money!!”First interview question: “What’s a talent fee, Beau?”Community Rules apply to all content you upload or otherwise submit to this site. This is the kind of game to stay away from as a bettor, because coaching changes can cut both ways. They can deflate a team or inspire it. However, if you think that is a relatively neutral factor in this game, you should pick Colorado. The Buffaloes are a surprisingly bad team at 0-3 in the Pac-12, but it would be even more surprising if they fell to 0-4 by losing to the worst team in the conference.
“I think in this day and age, everybody wants a quick fix. And I think some jobs and some processes, they take a while. I’ve been part of programs that were 0-11 and all of a sudden they win 12 and 13 games. That’s just part of the road. And when you sign up as a coach, to come into any program like this, you know it’s an uphill battle. We’re built that way from the beginning as coaches, especially if you’ve been in this business for a long time, like I have myself. I ain’t saying it was about me or whoever it was about. I’m just saying you’ve got to have confidence in yourself to do a good job and give these kids confidence in themselves.”
Now the responsibility falls on Beavers interim head coach Cory Hall to clean up the mess starting with Saturday afternoon’s battle of winless Pac-12 teams between Colorado and Oregon State at Reser Stadium in Corvallis. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. MT on Pac-12 Network.Iowa State’s Joel Lanning

As a senior, he led the Beavers to a share of the 2000 Pac-10 championship (with UW and Oregon) and a victory over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.Gary Andersen and Oregon State have mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately, the school announced on Monday.

Husky’s offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith checks all the obvious boxes when it comes to Oregon State’s next head coach. He played quarterback for the Beavers during some of their best seasons, including year 2000 when they lost only one game and trashed Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. The 38-year-old Smith was a graduate assistant at OSU before making his way up the coaching ranks.During his three-plus years at Washington, Petersen has lost defensive line coach Jeff Choate, who wanted to become head coach at Montana State. Chris Strausser left last season to take the assistant offensive line coaching gig for the Denver Broncos. Bush Hamdan jumped at the chance to be the Atlanta Falcon’s quarterbacks coach under offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian.

“This is an exceptionally difficult time for me, personally and professionally,” Barnes said. “I have known Gary for many years and respect him highly as a person, my friend, a head football coach and an incredible leader of young men. The timing of this is very difficult; however it is the best for all involved.”“I have no idea what to expect,” Wilson said of the Beavers. “I’m interested to see what happens.”
