Dave King of sister site Bright Side of the Sun, recapping for Blazer’s Edge from Phoenix’s Talking Stick Resort Arena, described the incident this way:

Portland led by 25 points after three quarters, then coasted to a 113-104 win at Phoenix.

In the grand scheme of things, this Kings game means very little. Its preseason, and key players for both teams will be absent from the court. Nonetheless, the Clippers should use this game as an opportunity to test those players who are available, to get a sense of their chemistry and respective skill sets.

Clippers: Jawun Evans, Wesley Johnson, Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, Miloš TeodosićAnd yet, Hield’s goal is not out of reach. Yes, hope springs eternal in Sacramento thanks to one of the League’s more intriguing young cores. This season, the Kings will feature 10 players with zero-to-two years of NBA experience, with nine first-round picks among them. Hield is the movement’s centerpiece.

I think making our teammates better. Making the game more simple for them. The more we can allow them to impact the game, affect the game, teams will maybe soften up on us and maybe we can make the game easier for ourselves. CJ plays a very efficient offensive game. I’m still looking to improve my efficiency as an offensive player, especially with so much responsibility…

Maybe you’d rather just watch the Suns only good player from last night?

Maryland Basketball: Alex Len ejected after scuffle with Caleb Swanigan

Caleb Swanigan and Alex Len were involved in a brief altercation in the fourth quarter, which earned them each technical fouls and ejections. LOOKING AT LEONARD: Meyers Leonard knows he didn’t do well last season so he rededicated himself to his craft over the summer, working out in Los Angeles with respected NBA trainer Drew Hanlen. Nukic’s arrival takes some of the pressure off the 7’1” Leonard as he enters his sixth season with the Blazers, but he still must prove he’s a solid reserve.

In addition, the Blazers don't want to reveal too much during Wednesday's game against the Suns on Wednesday, because Portland opens the regular season against Phoenix in one week.

“Not only did I feel lighter moving around the court, but when I got winded and I got tired, it wasn’t the same. I felt stronger. I felt good on the court. It might have its issues as far as recovery once we start really getting into the season, and I’ll address that,” he said. “But it’s truly made a difference.”

Portland’s recovery from the end of the LaMarcus Aldridge era took, oh, an hour? While the last vestige of the once-promising Oden-Roy-LMA troika went on long walks with Gregg Popovich and threw shade at the Lakers (an annual offseason tradition like none other) in the summer of 2015, the Blazers reloaded by nabbing several intriguing young players with untapped upside. That, plus the emergence of the Dame-C.J. bomb squad, laid the groundwork for a more exciting Blazers team that flipped 31-win projections into an improbable run to the second round of the playoffs.

We might be a better defensive team if we’re able to do that.

Even as Portland was basking in its newly refurbished open-concept offense two seasons ago, stepping over an injury-tattered Clippers team in Round 1 and giving the Warriors a firm nudge in Round 2, it felt like the team was bumping up against its ceiling. That certainly came to bear last season, when a few injuries and a still-leaky defense put the Blazers on the brink of the lottery before the Nurkic trade helped lift them over the morass fighting for the West’s 8-spot.

Takeaways from the LA Clippers' preseason loss to the Trail Blazers

LEARNING CURVE: For two seasons in a row, the Blazers have had second-half rallies that helped put them in the postseason. But coach Terry Stotts acknowledges that perhaps Portland missed out on the lesson the first time. “I think from my perspective last year is that we forgot how hard it is to do what we did in the second half of the season,” he said.Dave King here, all the way from Phoenix. You may not know me (I’m certain you don’t lol), but I run the friendly neighborhood Suns blog, BrightSideoftheSun.com. We were lucky enough to have two of us at the game tonight, so while Evan Sidery writes the BSotS gamer, I offered to share my observations on the Blazers for you since the game isn’t on TV anywhere up there. It’s a Dave to Dave sharing.

Much like Utah, however this time it took until the second quarter, Portland blew the game wide open. After only trailing by six, the Suns fell behind 44-28 with 6:45 left before halftime. The Blazers capitalized off of silly mistakes and Leonard continued his hot streak from the outside, which Watson said he would allow when defending bigs.

Swanigan and Len got into it as they both tried to box out (while Leonard makes another three). Len was holding inside position, while Swanigan tried to bully him from behind. After the play, Len pushed him away and Swanigan came back hard. Ejections for both.

No Jusuf Nurkic (concussion) for the Blazers. Of course no Vonleh either (knee).
Len is coming off a 2016-17 season in which he averaged 8.0 points and 6.6 rebounds. The Ukrainian big man did start 34 games for Phoenix.

Sunday’s game against Portland was a clinic on how not to play defense. The Clippers allowed the Trail Blazers to score 73 first half points, creating a deficit from which they were not able to recover. Most concerning was the fact that the Blazers were able to score at will and in a multitude of ways both in and out of the paint. Teodosic, Johnson and Thornwell were slow to guard the perimeter and Griffin had challenges in the post. Suffice it to say, the Clippers’ defense as a whole was simply not functioning.
