Leafs' Tyler Bozak hopes he has the stomach to bounce back

Patrick Marleau has played a fair bit in the middle this season, that’s come out of necessity for Babcock. He trusts the 38-year-old at centre more than Nylander, Marner or even Bozak in certain situations on the road.advocated for Lamoriello to make a trade in the past. But, I honestly have changed my opinion on the Leafs acquiring another defenseman before the deadline.

Playing alongside his de facto father Martin, the sophomore began to get back to the form he was at last season. Although he couldn’t manage to put up the same kinds of numbers, Marner just looked more confident with the puck and more dangerous with it.

Toronto Maple Leafs Prospect Report: Which 2017 picks are worthy of WJC?

Wayne Simmonds hasn’t been made available by the Philadelphia Flyers just yet, but if they don’t turn their season around he might be, and the Canadiens could be interested. Simmonds does have a 12-team no-trade list and a $3.975 million cap hit for one more year. The cost to acquire would be high, possibly too high for the Canadiens.Thank you for verifiying your email address. Close is a division of Postmedia Inc. Privacy FAQ Change Password

Toronto Maple Leafs lift some young spirits with annual trip to Sick Kids hospital

Calgary Flames Calgary (14-12-1) has lost two straight and three of four and comes off arguably its worst defeat of the season, 5-2 at home Monday to a Philadelphia Flyers team that entered on a 10-game losing streak. That was also the return of Elliott to Calgary, and he had 43 saves in being named the game’s No. 1 star.

Despite all of that, Hainsey’s biggest upside has been his contribution to the Leafs penalty kill. This is where the problem comes in as Babcock only plays Hainsey and Nikita Zaitsev on defense for the penalty kill.Last season, Martin finished with five goals and nine points in 82 games. Just over a quarter into this season, he has eight points in 26 games. Six of the eight points have been assists, which is better than last year. Martin’s best assist came as a secondary assist on an Auston Matthews goal in the Leafs’ most recent trip to Montreal.

Babcock seems to think so, at least from how he leaves that pair on the ice. That may seem like a compliment to that pair, but really it’s more indicative of Babcock’s lack of trust in the rest of the defense to play shorthanded.

The Calgary Flames need a quick change in momentum with the team suffering through losses in five of seven where both ends of the ice have struggled at times. Calgary ended a four game home stand on a 5-2 loss to the struggling Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night where the visitors took command with a three goal second. The Flames received scoring from Troy Brouwer and Sean Monahan but that wasn’t enough with Mike Smith allowing five goals on 21 shots. USA TODAY SportsThere have been times when Babcock has put forth the notion that Nylander will be an everyday centre — during a trip last February, for example, Babcock said he saw Nylander as a centre “for sure” — but he has not voiced as much recently.

Though Leafs forward Tyler Bozak hopes to be back after missing the Vancouver game, he will be monitored for the lingering affects of food poisoning. William Nylander could wind up in the middle for a chunk off the game.Micheal Ferland LW Ques thurs – Lower Body – 15 / 10 / 17“This day is always circled on the calendar pretty early on when you find out you’re going to do it,” defenceman Morgan Rielly said. “It’s a good chance to spend a day around some kids who aren’t having the best health at the moment. Going there and being a part of their day is fun. It’s a good thing that we do.”

Marner was moved back up to his regular line alongside James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak after playing a handful of games down with the fourth line. Now, it’s Nylander going through the same experience as Marner.

Coach Mike Babcock said giving the Leafs more leaders by example led to Marleau and 37-year-old defenceman Hainsey being signed in the summer."I want to take it another step further and lead on and off the ice and produce," Bozak said back in September. "As athletes, we always expect to improve as individuals and as a team. We expect to be better than we were last year."

Babcock’s attitude towards special teams is apparent in looking at ice-time, one group of players just plays on the power play and another group just plays on the penalty kill. It’s strange that a team that can roll all their lines because of their depth can’t have a second defensive pairing on the penalty kill.Jason Gregor: Forward Anton Slepyshev has had his name come up in trade talk, but since he’s waiver exempt still, why not reassign him to the AHL and let him play a lot to see what he does.

The Maple Leafs on the other hand just keep rolling. Toronto sits in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference and they lead the NHL in GF with 98. This little home stand they are starting sees the Leafs host the Flames and Oilers, two teams they beat just 3 games ago. As good as they have been on the season, the Pacific Division hasn’t been kind to Auston Matthews and Co. They are 4-4-1 in their 9 games against teams from the Pacific, with a 2-1 loss to the Canucks the latest trip to the L column against that group.
