Cobb, who’s missed the last two games, and Allison, who missed last week’s game, returned to practice on Thursday to potentially bolster an inconsistent offense for Monday night’s home game against San Francisco.
Goodwins return would give the 49ers arguably their most dynamic receiving threat that can stretch defenses deep and create space elsewhere. He suffered a thigh injury in Week 1 and has played sparingly since. He missed last weeks game after a hamstring injury popped up against the Chargers. Goodwin has just five catches for 54 yards on the season after logging career highs with 56 reception for 962 yards in 2017.
“I think we can be one of the best (receiver groups) in the league,” receiver Davante Adams said. “I honestly think that.”
I think its been concerning all year, Shanahan said of Taylor. Any time you have a surgery on your back, whether they say its a big deal or a little deal, always when youre dealing with your back it affects things. Its not just your back always. It can trickle down to other parts of your body.
Goodwin returns, but 49ers injuries reach point Shanahan has rarely seen
Speaking before practice, coach Mike McCarthy expected Allison and Cobb to be in the rehab group. Allison is out of the concussion protocol but is being limited by a hamstring injury, while Cobb has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury.
“It’d be great to have those guys,” Rodgers said on Thursday. “Obviously, they’ve played a lot of good football over the years and good football this year.”
Adams, who was questionable for the Detroit game with a calf injury, had nine catches for 140 yards and one touchdown against Darius Slay, the Lions’ premier corner. He didn’t have to carry the load, though, because the rookies proved their worth.
The Green Bay Packers are a mess after a bad loss to the Detroit Lions and now face a way-too-early “must win” against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football.
Brewers tickets cost more than Packers tickets this weekend
Valdes-Scantling, a fifth-round pick who got his first meaningful snaps the week before against Buffalo, had two catches in the first half but caught 5-of-6 balls in the second half to finish with seven catches for 68 yards. He put the Packers on the board in the second half with his first career touchdown. St. Brown, a sixth-round pick, had a 54-yard catch and run set up a late field goal that gave the Packers at least a chance for a miracle finish. He finished with three catches for 89 yards.
Obviously, its tough having the guys who are going to be (playing) not out there with you practicing, but its a good opportunity for the other guys to get in and get reps, like Richie James and guys, Vic (Bolden), 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard said, referring to two of the teams young wide receivers.
49ers open practice week with eight players out on offense
“I’ve got to say I’m impressed by the way MVS and EQ — to use acronyms, which is easier to use for guys with names like that — played last week,” Rodgers said. “I thought they made some big plays for us. There’s times in the game where they have to see it through my eyes because we’re making checks and calling things that maybe they haven’t heard before, but the way they responded was good. When they’re confident, when they’re able to just line up and go play, they’re talented guys. Very fast, athletic.”
Packers without Aaron Rodgers, Randall Cobb, Geronimo Allison at Thursdays practice
While the receivers are feeling better, Rodgers is not. Last week, he was a full participant at the Thursday practice for the first time since before the Week 1 game against Chicago. He felt so good than he wore a lighter knee brace. However, on Green Bay’s first possession against Detroit, he was twisted down by Lions linebacker Christian Jones.
Among the players who were held out of practice due to injuries were three starting offensive linemen (Joe Staley, Weston Richburg and Mike Person), three wide receivers (Pierre Garçon, Trent Taylor and Dante Pettis), tight end George Kittle and running back Matt Breida.

“Yeah, kind of a step back to last week, the beginning of the week,” he said. “Got to be in the rehab group again today and just hoping I get back out there tomorrow and have a feel-good (Saturday) and a practice (Sunday) and be good to go – hopefully back to where I was in Detroit.”
The Packers have 11 players on their injury report. Thats nothing; the 49ers have 16. That list includes six starters that did not practice.
Whitner: 49ers DL Thomas put into the wrong situation
Quarterback C.J. Beathard must improve the minutiae of his game, he said, to keep San Franciscos offense from making the back-breaking mistakes that led to the embarrassing loss to the Arizona Cardinals last week.
Its not rocket science. Its just little stuff. Its a game of inches, Beathard said Wednesday.
The second-year signal caller was responsible for four of his teams five turnovers against previously winless Arizona, costing the 49ers dearly in their third-straight defeat. Beathard threw two interceptions and lost two fumbles in the pocket, including one that was returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The first fumble came when star pass rusher Chandler Jones beat Joe Staley off the edge and knocked the ball from Beathards hands early in the third quarter. (If) I step up in the pocket two inches more, the ball doesnt get taken out of my hand, he said.
The 49ers will stream the press conferences Twitter, Facebook, and the teams app. The 49ers beat writers will also have updates from the media sessions. Ive embedded our beat writer Twitter list so you can follow along. Well have transcripts later today, along with the Thursday injury report.
Beathard doesnt deserve all the blame for his first-half interception. His pass down the middle to Pierre Garçon was dropped and batted in the air before getting snagged by safety Tre Boston. Beathards late pick to Bene Benwikere came on a desperate fourth-and-19 heave after the game had been decided.
Taking care of the ball will be a priority heading into Monday nights game against the Green Bay Packers, who have arguably the leagues best quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. The former league MVP would love to get extra chances against San Franciscos 29th-ranked scoring defense.
The 49ers have the NFLs worst turnover differential (minus-8) and are tied for the leagues worst record (1-4). Beathard will make his eighth career start and has 10 interceptions to eight touchdown passes.
