Structure fire at Surrey tire shop causes black smoke, traffic delays

According to Surrey Fire’s assistant chief of operations David Burns, the three-alarm fire was fully involved when crews arrived.

Traffic was been effected, with the Fraser Highway closed in both directions from 152 Street to 88 Avenue for a number of hours. The RCMP asked the public to avoid the area, and closed the highway while they investigated.

“They’ve made significant progress but it is still ongoing,” Burns said. “We expect we will be shut down probably for at least a couple more hours.”

“The fire was fully involved when crews arrived,” he said at the time. “We didn’t enter the building. We have aerials currently working on the building trying to extinguish it.

Fraser Highway was initially closed from about 152 Street to about 88 Avenue, but re-opened in the afternoon.

No injuries have been reported and the extent of damages is unknown, though both the tire and glass shops are believed to be gutted.

David Burns, Assistant Chief of Operations for Surrey Fire, says the fire started at an auto glass shop and tire shop that are connected to one another.

“It’s a glass shop and a tire shop, so there’s a lot of chemicals and products in there that are in danger of exploding,” he said. “We’re staying well away from that.”

Crews began getting control of the fire a couple of hours later, but Burns said it would still be some time before the fire was fully extinguished.

There’s no word on when the highway is expected to reopen, but Burns said it could be at least noon before some lanes may be cleared.

The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined. The building remained behind police tape Sunday afternoon, as investigators continued working at the scene.

Despite the warning from police, the fire attracted a large group of people who watched the firefighters in action.

There were actually people out there just watching it, and if I was them Id have had a mask on, thats how toxic it was, she said.

One bystander said he and his family could see the smoke while driving down Highway 10 several kilometres away.
