Man dead after shooting in Briar Hill-Belgravia area
A Toronto police spokesperson told Global News emergency crews were called to Dufferin Street, just north of Glencairn Avenue, at around 6:45 p.m. on Monday.

A Toronto Paramedics spokesperson said the man, who is believed to be in his 70s, was taken to a trauma centre in critical condition.

I agree that the public is misinformed. Education support workers make $40,000 per year as we do not work winter, March and summer breaks. That is what we make and not what we actually bring into our households. Our work load has increased my 50% without even being compensated for cost of living. Our benefits have also been decreased by 50%. These are the facts that the public is not made aware of. We are not teachers, Principals or Vice-principals. We are the people that help support your children each day

Police initially said witnesses reported shots coming from a white SUV or van that was last seen heading northbound on Dufferin Street. However, Det.-Sgt. Andy Singh told reporters Monday night he had information that suspect got out of a vehicle and approached the victim on foot before leaving the scene in the vehicle.

It was originally reported that the gunshots came from a moving vehicle, but police now say the suspects got out of his vehicle before shooting the victim.

Singh said it’s still early in the investigation and that it’s unclear if the victim, who hasn’t been identified, was targeted. He said no one else was shot at.

Officers say they could not confirm whether the shooting was targeted but they “believe the victim was the only one shot at.”

Coun. Mike Colle, who represents the area where the shooting happened, attended the shooting scene and pleaded for action from the upper levels of government.

Police were called to a plaza at Dufferin Street and Glencarin Avenue just before 7 p.m. to reports of a shooting.

“This has been the summer of hell. We’ve had shootings all up and down our streets. It seems there is no end in sight. I just think people have got to wake up and demand that something be done about these shootings and all these guns coming into our city,” he told reporters.

“The police are incredibly effective in working, but the cops can’t do this by themselves. We’ve got to change some of these laws to toughen up our bail system, gun possession, smuggling of guns.”

Meanwhile, Singh appealed for anyone in the area at around 6:40 p.m. with surveillance or dashcam video to call police at 416-808-1300 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.

Det.-Sgt. Andy Singh told reporters the suspect is believed to have been dressed in black, possibly wearing a mask, and last seen fleeing in a white-coloured SUV fleeing northbound on Dufferin Street.

“Right now there is a shooter out there, so if there’s anybody that has any information in regards to this vehicle or the person who was here we encourage them to come forward,” he said.

While police at first said the gunfire reportedly came from a moving vehicle, Singh said Monday night that the shooter is believed to have gotten out of a stopped vehicle, opening fire on foot.

A man is dead after being shot in the city's west end and investigators are now hunting for a suspect believed to have fled the scene in a white vehicle, Toronto police say.

A man has died of his injuries in hospital after being shot at a plaza in the Briar Hill-Belgravia area Monday evening.

Investigators are canvassing for video and are asking anyone with information to contact them at 416-808-1300 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.

Shortly after 6 p.m., Toronto police responded to a shooting near Dufferin Street and Glencairn Avenue.

It is a priority for CBC to create a website that is accessible to all Canadians including people with visual, hearing, motor and cognitive challenges.

Police initially said the shots were believed to have come from a moving vehicle. However Det-Sgt. Andy Singh later told CP214 that the shooter is believed to have been on foot.

"The vehicle was here behind me in the parking lot. There was a shooter that came out of that vehicle and proceeded to shoot at our victim. The shooter then got back in that car," Singh said.

The victim was rushed to a hospital trauma centre via emergency run, but later succumbed to his injuries.

Police are still working to notify next of kin and are not yet releasing information on the victim.

Yellow police tape cordoned off the plaza as officers scoured the scene for evidence Monday night. Cameras captured officers bagging a firearm at the scene, but police did not confirm whether that is believed to be the weapon used in the homicide.

A vehicle with bullet holes in it was found at the scene. Its not yet clear if the victim was inside the vehicle when he was shot.

He added that police are asking any business owners in the plaza who have not yet spoken with police to come forward so that they can obtain as much video evidence as possible.

"Right now there is a shooter out there, so if theres anybody that has any information about that person or the vehicle that was here, please give us a call," Singh said.

Singh said the suspect is described as a male who was dressed in black and was possibly wearing a mask.

The suspect was last spotted boarding a white SUV or van that went northbound on Dufferin Street, Singh said.

Singh said that the person who was shot appears to have been the only person who was shot at, but the motive for the killing is not yet clear.

Coun. Mike Colle, who represents the area, came to the scene of the shooting Monday night and said more needs to be done to curb the spate of gun violence that has plagued the city.

"The police are working around the clock. Weve had extra policing in this area since May of this year. The police are out in full force, but the police cannot stop these gun murders by themselves.

"What we need to do is stop these guns from coming across our border. Our border is a sieve."

He also said more needs to be done "to fix the broken bail system" and toughen laws for gun possession and called on federal and provincial politicians to do so.

"No matter how hard the police work, no matter how hard we work to make this community safe, these guns keep coming in and theres basically no control of the guns," Colle said. "We need to do something dramatic and stop making excuses for gun crimes."

Colle said the victim is a retiree in his 70s, but Singh said he is not identifying the victim yet as he is still working to notify next-of-kin.
