Vancouver police are searching for a suspect after a woman was followed home by a stranger and then sexually assaulted Thursday morning.

The victim, who is described as Asian and in her 20s, was waiting at a bus stop on 41st Avenue near Earles Street, when a man approached and began speaking to her at about 11:30 a.m., according to a police news release.

Police said the suspect is described as Asian, about 40-years-old, with short black hair, and an average build. He was wearing sunglasses, a white tank top, black shorts, and sandals at the time of the incident.

Before the bus arrived, the woman realized she'd forgotten something and started walking home. The suspect followed her, then sexually assaulted her inside.

The VPD said that detectives from its sex crimes unit are now investigating the incident and want to speak with witnesses, or anyone who might have dashcam video from the area, at the time of the occurence.

Police are describing the suspect as Asian and about 40 years old, with short black hair and an average build. He was wearing sunglasses, a white tank top, black shorts and sandals at the time.

Any witnesses or people with dashcam video from the area are asked to call 604-717-0604 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

A man approached her and struck up a conversation, before the woman realized she had forgotten something at home, and left the bus stop to go get it, police said.

Police are investigating a disturbing sexual assault in East Vancouver thats left neighbours both shocked and worried.

Authoriites said the incident began when the victim, an Asian woman in her 20s, was waiting by herself at a bus stop around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, on East 41 Avenue just east of Earles Street.

A stranger approached and began talking with her. Police said the woman realized she had forgotten something at home, and left the bus stop, walking south on Earles. 

“She started to walk away and she realized a short time later that the man was following her. This man, apparently caught up with her and engaged in conversation and followed her to her residence,” says Vancouver Police Department Constable Steve Addison.

"This man apparently caught up with her," Const. Steve Addison said. "[He] was able to follow her into her residence, and…[she] was attacked and sexually assaulted."

The woman, in her 20’s, was waiting at a bus stop on 41st Avenue near Earles Street on Thursday at 11:30 am, when a man approached her and struck up a conversation. She didn’t end up getting on the bus after realizing she had left something at home.

They described the suspect as an Asian man in his early 40s, with short black hair and an average build. At the time of the assault, he was wearing a white tank top, black shorts, sandals and sunglasses.

"Im really surprised, because I think its very safe here," a neighbour named Ruvi who commutes by bus to university told CTV News. "I never thought something like that could happen here."

She added that up until now she felt comfortable walking alone to the bus stop on East 41st alone during the day, but never at night.

Vancouver police sex crimes unit detectives are now looking to speak with potential witnesses and collect any dash cam video that was shot in the area around the time of the assault.

Police wouldnt say if additional resources, including foot patrols, were being deployed to the neighbourhood of mostly single-family homes.
